Facts About Poppy Hills

Favorite Holes

Easily our favorite hole was the reachable par-five eighteenth (535 yards). It requires two gutsy and well-executed shots—first to navigate the fairway bunkers at the hole’s centerline and the second over a native wash to an angled green set down in the beautiful valley below the clubhouse.

We also loved the one-shot eleventh (189 yards) that plays to a Redan green set among the pines on the far side of a deep natural wash. While left hole locations might look well defended by the large front-left bunker, the player can use the contours of the green to feed shots towards the flag.

The par-four third hole (421 yards) is another aesthetic beauty. It falls nearly 80 feet downhill and the player can get a great look at Monterey Bay from the tee perched above the bowling-alley fairway.

First Take on the Golf Course

We cannot say enough about the quality of the renovation done at Poppy Hills. The facility was a treat to begin with, but the changes made in 2014 brought a look to the course that takes it to another level. Its new face blends the forest charm of the inland holes at Spyglass Hill with the rustic minimalism of the renovated Pinehurst (No. 2). The immaculate presentation of the wide and rolling fairway corridors amid the towering Del Monte pines gives the property an enchanted quality.

You can play almost any kind of golf you want at the new-look Poppy Hills. The course well rewards the player who can control his ball flight but doesn’t unnecessarily punish the more one-dimensional golfer. Anyone from beginner to expert will enjoy the test here and find the exam to be extremely fair.

Observations About the Golf Course

The first look at the course sets the tone for a wonderful aesthetic experience. The broad vista that encompasses the ninth, sixteenth and eighteenth greens (set below the clubhouse) gives the player a preview of the landscape.
